Pressestimmen

`Her tough, beautiful, surgically precise prose is like nothing else I've ever read.' Donna Tartt `She is a voice like no other in contemporary journalism.' New York Times `Everything Didion writes has a land's end edginess to it- a hyperattentiveeye on the dramas of the human condition. She writes as someone who has come through great shudders of the earth with a fundamental understanding that everything is subject to instantaneous and complete revision.' Village Voice `She is the best chronicler California has.' Vogue `Valediction and elegy alike, WHERE I WAS FROM is a storm-tossed book... Some writers see Californians as brilliant dreamers; others see failures, seeking a second start. Didion steps over both arguments and portrays the settlers of the state as shrewd entrepreneurs who would stop at nothing to turn dirt into dollars.' Thomas Curwen, LA Times

Synopsis

A memoir of land, family and perseverance from one of the most influential writers in America. In this moving and surprising book, Joan Didion reassesses parts of her life, her work, her history -- and America's. Where I Was From, in Didion's words, "represents an exploration into my own confusions about the place and the way in which I grew up, misapprehensions and misunderstandings so much a part of who I became that I can still to this day confront them only obliquely." The book is a haunting narrative of how her own family moved west with the frontier from the birth of her great-great-great-great-great-grandmother in Virginia in 1766 to the death of her mother on the edge of the Pacific in 2001; of how the wagon-train stories of hardship and abandonment and endurance created a culture in which survival would seem the sole virtue. Didion examines how the folly and recklessness in the very grain of the California settlement led to the California we know today -- a state mortgaged first to the railroad, then to the aerospace industry, and overwhelmingly to the federal government.Joan Didion's unerring sense of America and its spirit, her acute interpretation of its institutions and literature, and her incisive questioning of the stories it tells itself make this fiercely intelligent book a provocative and important tour de force from one of America's greatest writers.

Alles war ganz super und schnell! Service war sehr gut! Ich wurde diese Firma nochmals benutzen. Ich danke Ihnen nochmal.

If you are from California (born and raised -- even after WWII --if you read it, you will know what I mean, you will find truth in much of this book. If you are not a Californian by birth, or came in 70s or later -- it might not mean much.

This book felt to me like a very good tour of the state in its early days, mixed in with a good dollop of communal guilt over a Paradise lost and the persistent joy of a Paradise found. The history might not be as captivating as some other places in the country, but the toil and turmoil and the heart and soul is deep and real. Joan Didion reports what she knew and knows and allows you to come to your own conclusions, and that’s what I love about her. No story per say, but highly recommended if you want to get a feeling for what this state was and is all about.

This is a fascinating book. First, Joan is a great writer. I don't pretend to be able to relate to her as a person, but she's just a fabulous writer. Since reading "The Year of Magical Thinking" I've been trying to read everything she's written.Loved reading about her family history and the history of other pioneers. Despite California's reputation as a state of free-thinkers and rugged individualists, it's actually a state based on land-grabbing, borrowed water, borrowed time and heavily subsidized industries.(I realize the same could be said of many other places.)I think most natives of California would appreciate this perspective, and those who aren't from the Golden State will also find something of interest because her descriptions of how places change over time are so poignant.

Beautifully written. One of the most enjoyable books I have read. This book speaks to the American experience not just in California, but for multi-generational Americans generally.

It took a long time to get engaged in the stories. Some are interesting, but honestly it's best read in bits here and there, because I get annoyed by Didion after too many pages. Love her other writing, but this is a bit indulgent and not compelling enough to make it worth it.
